Canada saw a big boom in international students during COVID. Since then, the government has adjusted policies to keep numbers sustainable and focused on real labour-market needs (like health care and skilled trades).

Key policy updates you should know

  • Proof of funds (GIC/Cost-of-living): For study-permit applications on or after September 1, 2025, a single applicant must show CAD 22,895 for living costs (tuition extra). Amounts are higher if family members accompany you.
  • SDS is closed: Canada’s Student Direct Stream stopped accepting applications on November 8, 2024.
  • PGWP rules changed: Graduating from a DLI no longer guarantees a PGWP—eligibility depends on your program and field of study (especially for non-degree programs). IRCC now ties eligible non-degree fields to long-term shortage jobs; the list was updated in July 2025. Master’s graduates can still access up to 3-year PGWPs.
  • Why this matters: Canada’s immigration plan is aligning student intake and work permits with the economy, reducing temporary resident volumes and prioritizing areas like health and trades.
